I am Jasja Valckx. In 2014, I started my doctoral research at the Department of Educational Studies at Ghent University, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ruben Vanderlinde and Prof. Dr. Geert Devos. Since October 2015, I was appointed as an assistant within the Department of Educational Studies. Now I am a postdoctoral researcher on the project: ‘Dual Learning in the Educational Master’s Programmes: Departments as Professional Learning Communities’ commissioned by the European Social Fund (ESF).
The aim of my doctoral research was to provide insight into teachers’ collaboration and professional development in secondary school departments as professional learning communities (PLCs). My research focused on the role of teacher characteristics (e.g. self-efficacy, educational beliefs, etc.), the role of departmental characteristics (e.g. departmental leadership, professional learning community characteristics, etc.) and the role of school characteristics (e.g. school leadership, autonomy, etc.) for teachers’ collaboration and professional development in departments as PLCs.
I obtained my Master’s degree in Educational Sciences at Ghent University in 2014. In October 2021, I defended my PhD thesis ‘The potential of departments as professional learning communities (PLCs) in secondary education: Understanding processes and stimulating factors’.
